History of Ska:

Unlike what many people think, Ska is NOT something No Doubt invented. Sorry! Ska has been around for over 40 years, it recently became very popular in the 90's. It started out in Jamiaca in the 1960's, then made its way over to Europe before landing in North America. Reggea came from Ska, Ska didn't come out of Reggea. Ska is DANCE music, not skater music. It's Jamiacan music, with R&B, drums are used on 2nd and 4th beats. Guitar is used to boost the ups on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th beats. Brass, and Keyboards are also important when making ska beats. Ska is not: R&B, Calypso, or Jazz. All of those types of music are interelated with ska. Even Salsa. The hard core Ska Music that is most popular in the North is sometimes called Ska-Core, Carnival Punk, or Skunkcore. This is where Flame Wars came from. Rude Boys, which has nothing to do with behavior and everything with attitude and being cool, used these wars to out dance each other. Later they used skateboards are part of their routines. This is how Skaters begin using Ska-core and incorporated Ska into their lifestyles. Skating was also shortened as Ska and the two joined together. A Rude Boy or Rude Girl, isn't an immature poseur, it's someone who understands and respects the history of Ska. Youth rebeling against the government, and it's expectations also came to use Ska as it's music. Anarchy is also assocaited with Ska. Anarchist are not about bloodshed and stupidity. It's fighting the Norm, being wild, and upredictable, letting go, being free. Loosing yourself in the music. That is Ska.
